Our Journey to Ella’s Race
Our team at Chick-fil-A® Falls Village and Six Forks & Strickland first learned about Ella Newmiller and her diagnosis in January 2008. After connecting with the Newmiller family, we wanted to find a meaningful way to support them with treatment expenses. Beginning that year, we hosted annual fundraisers called “Ellabrations” benefiting Ella and The Cure Starts Now. Over four years, these events brought our community together to support the Newmiller family and raise funds for pediatric brain tumor research.
After the fourth Ellabration, we felt called to do something even bigger. In March 2012, we hosted the very first Ella’s Race to continue raising funds and awareness for a cure. Just one month before that first race, Ella danced her way to heaven.
Since Ella’s passing, we have hosted fourteen Ella’s Races and, together with our incredible community, have raised more than $524,000 for pediatric brain cancer research benefitting The Cure Starts Now.
Today in the United States, about 300 children are diagnosed with DIPG each year. Children affected are primarily between the ages of 5 and 10. Currently there is no cure or effective treatment. Several families are told to go home and make memories, but we will continue to fight until families can hear “There’s a cure”. Ella’s Race and the Newmiller family hold a special place in our hearts, and we remain deeply committed to supporting research that will one day lead to a cure for all pediatric brain tumors. 💜🏃♀️
